Some emulsions require chemical demulsification or thermal treatment. Slopsmixtures may be transferred to shore facilities for processing, where additional treatment and disposal are performed in accordance with local and international regulations.

Regulatory context is provided largely by MARPOL Annex I, which governs the discharge of oily mixtures from ships. Compliance typically includes limits on oil content in effluent (commonly around 15 parts per million under appropriate conditions), maintenance of records, and the use of oil content meters, with discharge restrictions applying in certain zones and near coastlines.

They are generally treated as hazardous waste requiring appropriate containment, labeling, and spill-response planning to prevent soil and water contamination and to protect crew health and the environment.
