The common compound term slijpsteen specifically denotes a sharpening stone.

Sijpstenen come in several varieties. Whetstones or waterstenen are widely used in woodworking and kitchen knife sharpening and are typically used with water to cool the edge and wash away abrasive particles. Oil stones (olie-slijpstenen) use oil as a lubricant and binder. Modern alternatives include diamond stones and ceramic stones, which maintain a flat surface and cut quickly on a range of materials. In metalworking and broader engineering, grinding wheels and belt grinders (slijpmachines) are employed for material removal and edge preparation on larger parts and tools.

Techniques and principles. The goal of slijpen is to remove tiny amounts of material to form and refine a sharp edge. A consistent angle is crucial, as is controlled pressure and steady strokes. Abrasive progression from coarse to fine grit reduces burrs and achieves a keen edge. Lubrication (water or oil) helps cool the edge, reduces clogging, and improves the quality of the finish. Regular flattening or truing of sharpening surfaces maintains accuracy.

Applications and care. Slijp is essential for maintaining knives, chisels, plane irons, and other edged tools in woodworking and metalworking. Proper storage and cleaning of sharpening stones extend their life, and occasional flattening keeps the surface true.
