Skøytebaner, or ice rinks, are specially prepared surfaces of ice designed for ice skating. These surfaces can be found in both indoor and outdoor settings and vary greatly in size and design. Indoor rinks are typically climate-controlled to maintain consistent ice quality regardless of external weather conditions, making them operational year-round for activities like ice hockey, figure skating, and recreational skating. Outdoor rinks, on the other hand, are often seasonal, relying on colder temperatures to freeze natural bodies of water or the water sprayed onto prepared surfaces.

The construction of a modern ice rink usually involves a concrete slab foundation with a network of pipes embedded within it. A refrigerant circulates through these pipes, cooling the slab and freezing the water poured on top to create the ice surface. For outdoor rinks that are not natural ice, a similar system of water and freezing is employed, sometimes using portable refrigeration units. Maintenance is crucial for any skøytebane, involving regular scraping and resurfacing with a Zamboni or similar machine to remove nicks and grooves, ensuring a smooth and safe skating experience.
