Skyggeegenskaber, often translated as "shadow qualities" or "shadow aspects," refers to the hidden, unacknowledged, or repressed parts of an individual's personality. This concept originates from the work of Carl Jung, who described the shadow as the unconscious side of the personality that the conscious ego does not want to identify with. It encompasses traits, desires, and impulses that are considered undesirable, socially unacceptable, or that conflict with one's self-image.

These qualities are not necessarily evil but can include negative aspects such as aggression, selfishness, or envy, as well as positive ones that have been suppressed due to upbringing or societal pressures. For instance, someone who is overly polite and considerate might have a shadow side that includes assertiveness or a desire for personal space. The shadow is formed through a process of social conditioning and personal experiences, where certain parts of the self are disowned and pushed into the unconscious.

The integration of the shadow is considered a crucial step in the process of individuation, Jung's term for psychological development and self-realization. By acknowledging and understanding these hidden aspects, individuals can gain greater self-awareness, reduce inner conflict, and achieve a more complete and authentic self. Ignoring or denying the shadow, on the other hand, can lead to projection, where the unacknowledged traits are attributed to others, causing interpersonal difficulties and a distorted perception of reality. The process of shadow integration involves facing these disowned parts with curiosity and compassion, rather than judgment.
