Skismassa refers to the phenomenon of snow accumulation on skis or snowboards, particularly when the snow is moist or "sticky." This can occur when the snow temperature is close to the melting point and the base of the ski or snowboard has a wax that is not well-suited to those conditions. The friction between the ski base and the snow causes a slight melting, and this moisture can then adhere to the base, building up a layer of snow.

The build-up of skismassa can significantly impede the glide of the ski or snowboard, making it much harder to slide on the snow. This can transform an enjoyable skiing or snowboarding experience into a difficult and tiring one. The effect is often more pronounced on flatter sections of terrain where sustained contact with the snow is made.

To combat skismassa, skiers and snowboarders often use specific waxes tailored to the expected snow conditions. Cold waxes, for instance, are designed for very cold, dry snow and tend to repel moisture. For warmer, wetter snow, different waxes are used. Additionally, certain types of ski and snowboard bases, such as those with a structured pattern or those made of specific materials, can be more resistant to skismassa. Cleaning and waxing the base regularly is a common preventative measure. In some cases, particularly in racing, specialized anti-ice or anti-stick sprays can be applied to further reduce snow build-up.
