Skannerplatta, also known as a scanner bed or platen, refers to the flat glass surface on a flatbed scanner where documents, photographs, or other flat objects are placed for digitization. This surface is precisely engineered to be smooth and free of defects to ensure the highest possible image quality during the scanning process.

Beneath the skannerplatta lies the scanning element, typically a Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) or a Contact Image Sensor (CIS). A light source, often an LED or a cold cathode fluorescent lamp, illuminates the item placed on the skannerplatta. As the scanning element moves across the underside of the glass, it captures the reflected light and converts it into a digital image.

The skannerplatta is usually made of tempered glass to withstand repeated use and to resist scratches. It is often marked with alignment guides or rulers to assist users in positioning their items correctly. For larger documents, some scanners offer a transparent media adapter (TMA) that can be placed over the skannerplatta to scan slides, negatives, or transparencies. The cleanliness of the skannerplatta is crucial for optimal scan results, as dust, smudges, or fingerprints can appear as unwanted artifacts in the final digital image. Regular cleaning with a lint-free cloth and appropriate glass cleaner is recommended.
