Skalleformen is a term used in anatomy and anthropology to describe the external shape and proportions of the human skull. The word combines skalle (skull) and formen (form or shape) and concerns features such as the cranial vault’s length, width, height, and the relationship between the facial skeleton and the braincase.

Variation in skalleformen is substantial across human populations. A traditional, though now debated, framework classifies skull shapes into broad categories such as dolichocephalic (long-headed), mesocephalic (medium proportions), and brachycephalic (short-headed). These categories are typically based on the cephalic index, defined as the maximum cranial breadth divided by the maximum cranial length, multiplied by 100.

Measurements of skull shape can be obtained from living individuals or from skull specimens. Anthropometric tools such as calipers were historically used to take direct measurements, while modern assessments often rely on imaging methods like computed tomography (CT) scans and 3D surface imaging to analyze cranial geometry.

Significance and limitations: Skalleformen has been used in forensic anthropology, ergonomic and ergonomic design research, and medical contexts to understand cranial development and morphology. In the past, craniometric classifications fed into racial typology, a practice now viewed as scientifically problematic and ethically controversial. Today, cranial morphology is understood as the product of genetics, development, and environmental influences, with greater emphasis on functional biology and individual variation rather than broad population stereotypes.
