Sivilceler, also known as acne vulgaris, are a common skin condition characterized by the appearance of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. They typically form on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders. This occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. The plugged follicle can become inflamed or infected, leading to the characteristic lesions.

Several factors contribute to the development of acne. Hormonal changes, particularly during puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy, play a significant role by increasing sebum (oil) production. Genetics can also predispose individuals to acne. Certain medications, stress, and some cosmetic products are also believed to exacerbate or trigger breakouts.

Acne lesions manifest in various forms. Whiteheads are closed plugged pores, while blackheads are open plugged pores where the trapped oil oxidizes and appears dark. Inflamed pimples are red, tender bumps, and in more severe cases, nodules and cysts can form, which are larger, deeper, and more painful lesions.

Treatment for acne aims to reduce oil production, speed up skin cell turnover, fight bacterial infection, and reduce inflammation. Over-the-counter products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide are often effective for mild cases. Prescription medications, including topical retinoids, antibiotics, and oral medications like isotretinoin, may be necessary for moderate to severe acne. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine and avoiding picking at blemishes can also help manage the condition.
