Sisäkuristuksen, often translated as internal strangulation or internal constriction, refers to a medical emergency where blood flow to a body part is severely restricted by compression from within the body. This condition is distinct from external strangulation where pressure is applied from the outside. The causes can vary, but often involve the twisting or prolapse of organs, leading to a blockage of blood vessels.

A common example of sisäkuristus is an incarcerated or strangulated hernia. In this situation, a portion of the intestine or other abdominal tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall and becomes trapped. If the blood supply to the trapped tissue is compromised, it can lead to necrosis, or tissue death, which is a life-threatening complication. Another cause can be volvulus, where a loop of intestine twists around itself, cutting off blood flow.

Symptoms of sisäkuristus are typically severe and sudden. They can include intense pain at the site of constriction, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, and a lack of bowel movements or passing gas. In cases involving external body parts like a limb, symptoms might include extreme pain, swelling, discoloration, and numbness.

Immediate medical attention is crucial for sisäkuristuksen. Diagnosis often involves physical examination and imaging studies such as CT scans or ultrasounds. Treatment usually requires emergency surgery to relieve the compression, restore blood flow, and repair any damaged tissue. Prompt intervention significantly improves the prognosis and reduces the risk of serious complications like infection or organ failure.
