Sissehingamist is the Estonian term for inhalation, the act of drawing air into the lungs. The word combines sisse- meaning in, and hinga-/hingama meaning to breathe. In general physiology, inhalation is the first phase of respiration, performed by the coordinated action of the diaphragm and chest muscles that enlarge the thoracic cavity and allow air to flow through the nose or mouth, down the airway, and into the lungs where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide is later expelled during exhalation.
