Sinusitti is a common medical condition characterized by inflammation of the sinuses. The sinuses are air-filled cavities located within the bones of the skull, surrounding the nasal passages. When these linings become inflamed, it is referred to as sinusitis. The inflammation can lead to a buildup of mucus, causing congestion and pressure.

There are several causes of sinusitis. The most frequent cause is a viral infection, often a common cold. Bacterial infections can also cause sinusitis, particularly if a viral infection doesn't fully resolve or if there are other contributing factors. Allergies are another significant cause, as allergic reactions can trigger inflammation in the sinus membranes. Less commonly, fungal infections or structural abnormalities in the nasal passages, such as a deviated septum, can lead to sinusitis.

The symptoms of sinusitis can vary in severity but commonly include facial pain or pressure, a blocked or stuffy nose, and discharge from the nose. Other symptoms may include a reduced sense of smell, cough, fever, bad breath, and fatigue. Acute sinusitis typically lasts for less than four weeks, while chronic sinusitis persists for 12 weeks or longer, despite treatment attempts.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a patient's medical history and a physical examination. Imaging studies like CT scans may be used in persistent or complicated cases. Treatment for sinusitis depends on the underlying cause. Viral sinusitis often resolves on its own, with symptom management focusing on pain relievers and decongestants. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial sinusitis. Antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids are often recommended for allergic sinusitis.
