The primary advantage of a single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) vehicle would be simplified operation and potentially lower costs due to the elimination of stage separation mechanisms and the recovery and refurbishment of multiple components.

Achieving SSTO is a significant engineering challenge, primarily due to the tyranny of the rocket equation. This principle dictates that a rocket needs a very high mass ratio (the ratio of initial mass to final mass) to achieve orbital velocity.
