Singlestagetoorbit
Singlestagetoorbit is a conceptual approach to spaceflight where a single launch vehicle ascends from Earth's surface and reaches orbit without employing any stages that are jettisoned during flight. This contrasts with traditional multi-stage rockets, where spent stages are discarded to reduce weight and increase efficiency. The primary advantage of a single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) vehicle would be simplified operation and potentially lower costs due to the elimination of stage separation mechanisms and the recovery and refurbishment of multiple components.
Achieving SSTO is a significant engineering challenge, primarily due to the tyranny of the rocket equation.
Various concepts for SSTO vehicles have been proposed and explored, including reusable spaceplanes, air-breathing rocket engines
