Simultaneitate is the quality or condition of events occurring at the same time. The term functions as the Romanian noun for simultaneity and is used across physics, philosophy, and everyday language to describe co-occurring phenomena. Its etymology traces to Latin simultaneus, via French simultanéité, into Romanian as simultaneitate.

In physics, simultaneitatea is defined with respect to a frame of reference: two events are simultaneous if they share the same time coordinate in that frame. A fundamental implication is the relativity of simultaneity: in Einstein’s theory of special relativity, observers in relative motion may disagree about whether distant events are simultaneous. A classic illustration involves a train and a stationary observer: a flash from the middle of a moving train reaches the front and back ends at different times for the observer on the platform, while an observer on the train may regard them as simultaneous. These results challenge the notion of an absolute, universal time.

Beyond physics, simultaneitate is used in philosophy of time to discuss the nature of temporal order, and in everyday language to describe events that occur together or overlap in time. In applied contexts, defining and coordinating simultaneity involves conventions for synchronizing clocks or signals, with practical consequences for technologies such as global positioning systems and distributed computing.
