Silversmelting is the process of extracting and refining silver from its ore or from recycled materials. This ancient craft involves several stages, beginning with the mining of silver-bearing ores, such as argentite or native silver. Once extracted, the ore undergoes crushing and grinding to liberate the silver particles.

Several methods can be used to separate the silver from the other minerals. Early techniques relied on simple physical separation methods like panning, similar to gold panning. More advanced historical processes involved smelting, where the ore was heated to high temperatures in a furnace, often with lead, to create an alloy from which silver could be separated. This separation could be achieved through cupellation, where the lead was oxidized and absorbed into a porous material, leaving the silver behind. Alternatively, mercury amalgamation was used, where silver formed an alloy with mercury, which was then heated to vaporize the mercury, leaving purified silver.

Modern silversmelting employs more sophisticated techniques. Electrowinning and electrorefining are common methods for purifying silver. In electrowinning, silver ions from a solution are deposited onto a cathode. Electrorefining uses an electrolytic cell to transfer silver from an impure anode to a pure cathode, leaving impurities behind. Recycling of silver, such as from old jewelry, silverware, and electronic components, is also a significant source, utilizing similar refining processes. The final product of silversmelting is refined silver, often in the form of bars or ingots, ready for industrial, artistic, or investment purposes.
