SignFX is an open, extensible framework for creating and validating digital signatures on electronic data. It defines a portable signature container and a verification protocol intended to work across diverse platforms and workflows, with a focus on interoperability, verifiability, and auditable signing events.

The framework comprises a signature container (attached or detached), descriptive metadata (signer identity, timestamp, policy), a pluggable algorithm suite, and a certificate/trust layer. Data to be signed is represented by a canonical form, ensuring consistent signing across different tools, while the container preserves the original data format when needed.

SignFX supports multiple algorithms through a plugin model, including RSA, ECDSA, and Ed25519, with post-quantum options in newer profiles. It endorses strong hash functions and provides options for timestamping, revocation checks, and policy enforcement. Signatures can be serialized in binary, JSON-based, or XML-like wrappers to suit existing systems.

SignFX originated in a community-driven open specification in the late 2010s and has seen adoption in document management, software distribution, and secure messaging workflows where auditable signatures are required.

Adoption varies by ecosystem, and interoperability depends on strict adherence to the official specification and correct trust configuration. Fragmentation can occur due to multiple implementations and diverging profiles, and the added complexity may be a barrier for smaller organizations.
