Definition and scope

The signalleringspaden comprises the route that is configured between a train’s origin and its destination within a signaling system. This route includes fixed or cab signals, point machines (switches), track circuits or axle counters for occupancy detection, and the communication links that connect trackside hardware to central or local interlocking equipment. The path defines which signals must show proceed or stop and which points must be aligned to allow movement.

Operation

Typically, a route is selected by a signaller or by an automated signaling system. The interlocking checks that the path is free from conflicting movements, locks the required track elements, and then sets the signals to show the appropriate aspect. Occupancy detection confirms that the route remains clear as the train passes through. If any part of the path becomes blocked, the interlocking may release the route and restore restrictive signaling to maintain safety.

Relation to technology

Signalleringspaden interfaces with various signaling technologies, from mechanical and electrical interlocking to modern electronic interlocking and cab signaling. In many European networks, the concept remains central even as systems evolve toward centralized control and train control standards such as ETCS, which provide higher levels of route control and safety.
