SigmadeltaADCs are a class of analog-to-digital converters that use a sigma-delta modulator with feedback and oversampling to convert an analog input into a high-resolution digital stream. The key idea is to push most of the quantization noise out of the signal band by sampling at a rate well above the Nyquist rate and shaping the noise with the modulator’s topology. The resulting high-frequency quantization noise is removed by a digital decimation filter to produce a lower-rate, high-precision digital output.

A sigma-delta converter typically comprises a delta-sigma modulator, a digital decimation filter, and a data path to the system. The modulator often uses a high-gain loop and a quantizer (commonly a 1-bit or multi-bit ADC) in the feedback path. The order of the modulator (first, second, or higher) and whether the quantizer is single-bit or multi-bit determine the achievable resolution, bandwidth, and stability. Continuous-time (CT) and discrete-time (DT) implementations are both used, with trade-offs in noise performance and silicon complexity. Oversampling ratios, sometimes in the tens to hundreds, determine how much quantization noise is pushed out of band.

In practice, Sigma-Delta ADCs excel in applications requiring high resolution over moderate bandwidth, such as audio, precision instrumentation, and sensor interfaces. They are favored for their simple analog front ends, robust linearity, and good distortion performance, offset by digital processing requirements and potentially higher power for high-speed, high-resolution use cases. Careful design of loop filters, quantizers, and decimation stages is required to ensure stability and fidelity.
