Siemenlevintä, or seed dispersal, is the movement or transport of seeds away from the parent plant. This process is crucial for plant reproduction and survival, as it reduces competition between the parent and offspring for resources like light, water, and nutrients, and helps plants colonize new habitats.

There are several primary mechanisms of seed dispersal. Abiotic factors, such as wind, water, and gravity, play a significant role. Wind dispersal, or anemochory, is common for plants with lightweight seeds or seeds equipped with wings or feathery structures, like dandelions or maple trees. Water dispersal, or hydrochory, is utilized by plants that grow near water bodies, with seeds often being buoyant or enclosed in waterproof coatings, such as coconuts or water lilies. Gravity dispersal, or barochory, occurs when seeds fall directly from the parent plant to the ground below, most effective for larger, heavier seeds.

Biotic factors also contribute significantly to seed dispersal. Animals are major agents of dispersal through various methods. Zoochory encompasses dispersal by animals. This can happen through ingestion and subsequent excretion of seeds (endozoochory), where animals eat fruits and the seeds pass through their digestive tracts. Birds, mammals, and insects are common dispersers through this method. Another animal-mediated method is epizoochory, where seeds attach to an animal's fur, feathers, or skin and are carried to new locations, often facilitated by hooks or sticky substances on the seed coat, like burrs. Myrmecochory involves dispersal by ants, which are attracted to elaiosomes, fatty appendages on some seeds, and carry them to their nests. Humans also inadvertently or intentionally contribute to seed dispersal through activities like agriculture and travel.
