The phrase denotes the internal fill that shapes the side sections of a piece and contributes to its overall silhouette, comfort, and resilience. In Finnish textile and furniture literature, sidetyynystä is often described in relation to the cushion filling (tyynyn täyte) rather than as a separate product.

Etymology and usage: The word sidetyynystä derives from sidetyyny, “side pillow,” with the suffix -stä indicating a relationship to the pillow or its material. The term is mostly found in older or regionally specific texts, and in modern industry the more general terms “cushion filling” or “padding” are used.

Materials: Traditional sidetyynystä may consist of natural fibers such as horsehair, wool, cotton batting, or flax, which provide structure and support. Over time synthetics have become common, including polyurethane foam cores, polyester fiberfill, and blended fabrics that wrap the core. Some designs use multi-layer constructions, combining a firm foam core with a softer wrap to achieve both shape retention and comfort.

Production and care: The stuffing is typically enclosed within a durable inner lining and the outer upholstery fabric.
