A shotshell is a type of softball that is designed for high-speed pitches. It is typically used in high-level women's fastpitch fastpitch softball and is characterized by its thick, hard cover and its small, hard core. The shotshell is a large, high-speed ball, but it is designed for high-level pitchers who are able to produce exceptional speed and control.

The shotshell got its name from its resemblance to a shotgun shell. It is intentionally made to be as hard as possible, with a very small core. The thick cover provides additional hardness and durability, allowing the ball to withstand the high-speed pitching of professional athletes.

The use of the shotshell is permissible by the sports governing body, but rules state that a ball is considered acceptable if it falls within a slightly larger size and hardness tolerance than that of the shotshell. The shotshell itself may not be used due to the rules prohibiting the shotshell, it is unlikely that players in non-regulation leagues (collegiate and non-professional) would find out they need to keep from using these shot shells or still be aware of the fact the balls can be shot. The shotshell has been a subject of much debate in the softball community, with some advocates for its use and others arguing that it is too unorthodox for the sport.
