The term has grown within LGBTQ+ performance communities as a way to frame rapid, narrative-driven numbers that fit into short time slots.

In performances, shortdrag sets typically run from two to five minutes. Acts prioritize efficient storytelling, quick costume changes, and high-impact visuals, often using fast-cut choreography, rapid-fire punchlines, and audience interaction. Performers may rely on pre-recorded audio cues, live vocals, or lip-syncing, and stagecraft emphasizes portability, with compact costumes and minimal set pieces. The format is commonly used in cabarets, festivals, and streaming programs where time is limited.

Variants include Microdrag (about two to three minutes) and Nano-drag (60 seconds or less), each pushing fewer or shorter beats, sometimes focusing on one gag or character reveal. Some shows mix shortdrag with longer acts to create a varied program; the format is also used as a training ground for performers to develop timing and stage presence.
