shinmei

Shinmei is a Japanese term used in Shinto to denote sacred beings or divine essence. It is written with the characters for “god” and “bright/clear,” and in religious use it can refer to deities, divine phenomena, or the sanctity of sacred spaces. The word also appears in the names of shrines and religious structures.

In Shinto practice, shinmei can function as a generic descriptor of divinity or as part of proper names for shrines. Many shrines incorporate Shinmei in their official names, such as Shinmei Jinja or Shinmei Jingu. The term is thus both a theological concept and a toponymic element within the Shinto landscape.

Shinmei-zukuri (神明造) denotes an ancient form of Shinto shrine architecture associated with the Shinmei tradition. It is regarded as one of the earliest native styles of shrine construction. Surviving examples are rare, and scholars discuss the exact dating and development of the style. When described, Shinmei-zukuri is presented as a simple, austere building tradition that influenced later architectural forms. The Grand Shrine at Ise (Jingū) is often cited in discussions of early Shinmei-influenced architecture, though precise attribution and dating are matters of scholarly debate.

In modern Japan, Shinmei remains in use primarily in religious and toponymic contexts. The term continues to appear in shrine names and in discussions of Shinto history and architecture.
