Shalehosted hydrocarbons may be oil, gas, or natural gas liquids. They are typically found in organic-rich mudstones with low matrix permeability, where hydrocarbons are stored in the rock matrix and/or in fractures. Production from shalehosted deposits generally requires stimulation, such as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling.

Exploration and appraisal rely on well logs, core samples, and seismic data to assess organic content, thermal maturity, porosity, and brittleness. Recovery performance depends on rock properties, fracture networks, and well spacing. In the United States, major shale plays include Bakken, Eagle Ford, and Permian, with others such as Barnett and Marcellus playing roles. Other regions include Canada’s Montney and Duvernay, Argentina’s Vaca Muerta, and several Chinese formations. The concept also encompasses shale-hosted hydrocarbons in mature basins as exploration expands to new shale-rich sequences.

Environmental and regulatory considerations include water usage and management, potential contamination risks, induced seismicity, and surface disturbances. Best practices emphasize disclosure, monitoring, and mitigation, while public debate continues over environmental impact, energy security, and economic effects associated with shalehosted resources.
