Shaftless is an adjective used in engineering and manufacturing to describe equipment designed or built without a central rotating shaft. In many cases this means the primary drive or load path is implemented without a single continuous shaft running through the component, instead using end discs, a belt, or a distributed set of supports to transmit torque and maintain alignment.

In material handling, shaftless conveyors and shaftless screw conveyors are common examples. Shaftless conveyors typically use a belt or chain supported by a series of discs or rollers and driven at the ends, allowing for tight curves and easier cleaning in confined spaces. Shaftless screws or augers move material using a flighted tube that is supported by end discs rather than a continuous shaft, which can improve sanitation and accommodate sticky or fibrous materials. These designs are favored in industries such as food processing, recycling, waste management, and pharmaceuticals where hygiene, cleaning, and compact routing are important.

Benefits of shaftless designs include reduced crevices for contaminant buildup, simpler cleaning and maintenance, and greater flexibility in routing and installation. They can also reduce complexity in segments where a continuous shaft would be prone to misalignment or damage. However, shaftless systems may have lower torque capacity, higher cost, and specialized support or lubrication requirements.
