Shaadi is the Hindi word for marriage, and it refers to the traditional Hindu wedding ceremony and the entire marital union in India. It is a significant sacrament in Hinduism, often viewed as a sacred bond that extends beyond this life. The wedding celebrations typically span several days, beginning with pre-wedding ceremonies like the Sangeet, a night of music and dance, and the Mehendi, where intricate henna designs are applied to the bride's hands and feet. The main wedding day involves a series of elaborate rituals performed under a mandap, a canopy erected for the ceremony. Key among these is the Kanyadaan, where the bride's father gives her away, and the Saptapadi, the seven steps taken around a sacred fire, symbolizing the marital vows and the couple's journey together. The groom's acceptance of the bride is marked by the tying of the Mangalsutra, a sacred necklace, and the application of Sindoor, red vermilion powder, to the bride's hair parting.
