The term is commonly said to derive from the Seyti language, combining a root associated with memory or telling with a suffix that marks ceremony. Some sources note regional variants or alternate spellings such as seytinguo, but all share the core sense of a structured communal rite.

In its typical form, seytingu takes place at dusk in a public hall or similar space, often aligned with seasonal or life-event timings such as post-harvest, birth, or mourning. Elders recount genealogies and deeds, while younger participants respond with established phrases, ask clarifying questions, or offer contributions. Tokens such as carved discs, shells, or woven bands may be exchanged to symbolize transferred obligations and remembered ties.
