Sensor networks can be simple, with a single sensor in a device, or large, distributed systems that gather data from many locations.

Core components include the sensors themselves, signal conditioning, data acquisition hardware, communication networks, and processing or storage platforms. The typical workflow is sensor data collection, calibration and validation, transmission, data fusion and analysis, and presentation of results. Metadata and calibration records are important for data quality over time.

Key challenges are energy management for battery-powered sensors, maintenance and calibration, reliability and data quality, interoperability and standards, and security and privacy. Effective sensorering also requires careful placement and redundancy planning to ensure representativeness and resilience.

Historically, sensorering grew with automation and the Internet of Things, evolving toward edge computing and scalable sensor networks. Current trends emphasize low-power sensors, standardized data models, and seamless integration with analytics platforms to enable real-time monitoring and decision support.
