Semiotics, or semiotiska in Swedish, is the interdisciplinary study of signs and sign processes, or semiosis. It examines how meaning is produced, communicated, and interpreted through signs within social and cultural contexts. The field analyzes not only language but all forms of sign systems, including images, sounds, gestures, and icons embedded in everyday life, media, art, and technology.

The origin of semiotics is often traced to big theoretical traditions that treat signs as central to understanding human communication. In the Swedish and broader European discourse, Saussure's structuralism and Peirce's triadic theory have been especially influential. Saussure framed the sign as a two-part relation between a signifier (the form) and a signified (the concept), with meaning arising from differences within a sign system rather than from any positive link to the external world. Peirce developed a triadic model consisting of the sign, the object it refers to, and the interpretant (the sign’s meaning in the mind of an interpreter), and he distinguished signs as icons, indices, or symbols based on their relation to their objects.

Core concepts in semiotics include sign, sign system, code, and semiosis—the ongoing process by which signs generate meaning. Analysts examine denotation and connotation, the role of culture and conventions, and how context influences interpretation. The field spans branches such as linguistic semiotics, visual semiotics, and biosemiotics, and it is applied across disciplines, including literature, media studies, advertising, anthropology, design, and digital culture. Contemporary semiotics continues to explore how signs shape perception, ideology, and social interaction in a media-saturated world.
