Sellofaan is a thin, transparent sheet made from regenerated cellulose. It is produced by the viscose process, which involves treating cellulose with chemicals like carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide. The resulting viscous solution is then extruded through a narrow slit into an acid bath, causing the cellulose to regenerate into a film. Sellofaan is known for its excellent clarity, gloss, and barrier properties against grease and oxygen.

Historically, sellofaan was invented by Swiss chemist Jacques E. Brandenberger in 1900 and patented in 1908. He initially envisioned it as a waterproof coating for textiles, but its potential as a packaging material quickly became apparent. It gained widespread popularity in the mid-20th century for wrapping a variety of consumer goods, including food products, cigarettes, and cosmetics, due to its ability to keep items fresh and visible.

While traditional sellofaan is biodegradable and compostable, its production process involves significant chemical use. Modern packaging often utilizes plastic films like polypropylene or polyethylene, which are more cost-effective and offer improved moisture resistance, though they are not biodegradable. Nevertheless, sellofaan continues to be used in certain applications where its unique properties are valued, such as decorative wrapping and as a component in some specialized packaging. Its environmental impact is a subject of ongoing discussion, with a focus on sustainable sourcing of cellulose and efficient manufacturing processes.
