Self-synchronization is the ability of a system to align its timing, phase, or symbol boundaries automatically, using only information contained within the data stream or the system’s dynamics. It enables recovery from misalignment caused by noise, jitter, or interruptions without relying on a persistent external timing reference. The concept appears across digital communications, signal processing, electronic design, and nonlinear dynamics.

In digital communications, self-synchronizing codes are designed so the receiver can determine where one symbol ends and the next begins based solely on the observed sequence. The resynchronization time is bounded, meaning alignment can be restored within a limited number of symbols after a disruption. Such schemes may reduce synchronization overhead but can trade off coding efficiency or resilience to certain error patterns.

In hardware and signal processing, self-timed or asynchronous techniques operate without a global clock, using local handshakes and data-driven timing. Self-synchronization here refers to the system's ability to lock onto an incoming signal's timing and maintain correct operation. While tolerant of clock drift and jitter, these designs pose challenges for verification, metastability, and power management.

In physics and complex systems, self-synchronization describes spontaneous alignment of rhythms among interacting components, such as coupled oscillators or power grids. Synchronization can improve coherence and efficiency but may also enable cascading perturbations. The study of such phenomena uses mathematical models to assess stability, coupling strength, and robustness.
