Self-schemas are organized knowledge structures about the self that guide how people interpret self-relevant information and decide how to act. They are components of the broader self-concept and help explain why people notice, remember, and evaluate trait-relevant information in ways that fit their self-views.

They develop from a lifetime of experiences, social roles, feedback from others, and cultural expectations. Because they are domain specific, a person may hold distinct self-schemas for areas such as academics, athletics, relationships, or work, each weighting traits differently. Self-schemas are relatively stable but can change when new, salient experiences or persistent feedback contradict an existing view, or when multiple schemas compete and reorganization occurs.

Functionally, self-schemas bias attention toward self-relevant information, shape interpretation of ambiguous events, and influence what is remembered. They can boost memory for stereotype-consistent instances and bias interpretation toward self-consistency. They also shape motivation and behavior by making actions that align with the self-view more autonomous or fluent, and by affecting self-esteem through the value placed on schema-consistent traits.

Researchers study self-schemas with domain-specific trait judgments, reaction-time tasks, and affective or memory paradigms that reveal biases in processing self-relevant information. Measurements tend to emphasize both descriptive content and processing efficiency rather than a single global schema.

Self-schemas relate to broader concepts such as the self-concept, self-esteem, and social identity, and they interact with situational cues to influence behavior. The concept was introduced in foundational work by Hazel Markus and colleagues and remains a central element in theories of self and personality.
