A sedimentationselement, or sedimentation element, is a modular device integrated into gravity-based sedimentation or clarification stages to improve the removal of suspended solids. It increases the effective settling area or directs flow through multiple small channels, allowing finer particles to settle more efficiently without significantly enlarging the tank footprint.

Several common forms exist. Inclined plate settlers consist of many parallel plates at a small angle, creating numerous thin settling channels that extend the available settling area. Tube settlers use bundles of short, horizontal tubes to generate multiple narrow flow paths and additional surface for particle deposition. Other variants include vertical baffles or packed-bed modules designed to enhance contact time and reduce short-circuiting within the clarifier.

Sedimentation elements are typically installed in inlet regions of clarifiers or within compact tanks to improve hydraulic distribution and promote uniform settling. They work in conjunction with conventional sludge collection systems, which gather settled solids for removal. The elements do not replace the need for adequate mixing, flocculation, or chemical pretreatment where required, but they can enhance performance when flow is optimized and wear is managed.

Material selection varies with application and may include stainless steel, aluminum, concrete, PVC, or fiberglass-reinforced plastics, chosen for durability, chemical resistance, and ease of maintenance. Maintenance considerations include avoiding clogging and biofouling, periodic cleaning of channels, and ensuring unobstructed flow paths.

Sedimentation elements are widely used in municipal wastewater treatment, potable water pretreatment, and various industrial processes where space constraints or high effluent clarity are important. Their performance depends on particle characteristics, coagulant or flocculant use, flow distribution, and regular maintenance.
