A scribe, or scriber, is a person who writes or copies texts, especially in historical contexts. The word traces back to the Latin scriba, meaning writer or secretary, and entered English through Old French. While “scribe” is the more common modern form, “scriber” appears in some scholarly or historical writings to emphasize the act of writing or copying.

Historically, scribes played a central role in preserving knowledge. In ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and other civilizations, trained copyists rendered sacred and administrative texts onto clay tablets, papyrus, or parchment. In medieval Europe, the scriptoria of monasteries housed scribes who duplicated religious works, classical literature, legal charters, and scientific treatises. Scribes often served as custodians of libraries and archives, and they developed specialized skills in paleography, languages, and calligraphy.

Roles and methods varied by region and era, but common duties included copying texts accurately, correcting errors, glossing or translating passages, preparing editions for study, and organizing or cataloging manuscripts. They used tools such as reed or quill pens, ink, parchment or vellum, wax tablets, and ruling pens to lay out lines and margins for legibility.

In contemporary usage, the term “scriber” is uncommon and often replaced by “scribe,” “copyist,” or “writer.” When used, it typically refers to someone who records information or creates copies of documents, rather than indicating a formal medieval profession.
