Schmelzelektrolyse, also known as molten salt electrolysis, is an electrochemical process used primarily for the production of metals and other materials from their compounds. The method involves dissolving a solid ionic compound in a molten salt electrolyte, typically at high temperatures, to facilitate the separation of ions through electrolysis. This technique is particularly significant in the extraction of reactive metals such as aluminum, magnesium, and calcium, which cannot be obtained through conventional reduction methods like carbon reduction.

In the process, the ionic compound is dissolved in a molten salt, often a mixture of chlorides, fluorides, or oxides, which lowers the melting point of the electrolyte and improves conductivity. An electric current is then passed through the molten mixture, driving the dissociation of the compound into its constituent ions. At the cathode, reduction occurs, where metal ions gain electrons and form molten metal, which can be collected. At the anode, oxidation takes place, releasing non-metallic byproducts such as chlorine gas or oxygen, depending on the electrolyte.

Schmelzelektrolyse is widely employed in the Hall-Héroult process for aluminum production, where alumina (aluminum oxide) is dissolved in molten cryolite (sodium hexafluoroaluminate) at temperatures around 950–1000°C. The process requires significant energy input due to the high operating temperatures, making energy efficiency a key consideration in industrial applications. While effective for certain metals, the method is less common for less reactive elements due to economic and technical constraints.

Beyond metallurgy, schmelzelektrolyse has applications in the production of high-purity materials, such as silicon for semiconductors, and in emerging technologies like hydrogen production through electrolysis of molten salts. The process remains an essential tool in materials science, offering a versatile means of refining and synthesizing compounds under controlled electrochemical conditions.
