Scenografer are professionals who design the visual and spatial aspects of stage and screen productions. In theatre, film, television, and other live or recorded performances, they translate a director’s concept into the physical environment of a piece, shaping scenery, space, and the integration of props, textures, color, and often basic lighting concepts. The practice is known as scenography, and the individual practitioner is a scenograf.

Responsibilities of scenografer typically include concept development, creating sketches, mood boards, scale drawings, and models; selecting materials and finishes; coordinating with lighting designers, sound designers, costume designers, carpenters, prop masters, and other craftspeople; preparing construction documents; overseeing set construction, installation, and dismantling; and ensuring safety and budget compliance. They may also conduct historical or stylistic research to support the production and help define the aesthetic voice of the project.

In the theatre context, scenografer collaborate closely with directors and stage management to optimize sightlines, space utilization, and flow. In film and television, they work as part of a broader production design team, aligning the set design with cinematography, lighting, and visual effects to achieve a cohesive look.

Education and career paths vary, but many scenografer study theatre design, scenography, architecture, or fine arts, building portfolios through drawings, renderings, and physical or digital models. They may work as freelancers, with theatre companies, or within film studios, and often participate in professional networks and associations in their country.

Terminology varies by language and medium; in English-language contexts, the role is commonly called set designer or production designer, while scenography remains the broader discipline.
