Sawwood is a common name in the timber trade for the heartwood of several tropical hardwood species that share similar properties. It does not refer to a single species, but to woods valued for density, hardness, and wear resistance.

Description: Sawwood ranges from pale to dark brown, often with reddish or amber tones. The grain is typically straight to interlocked, and the texture is fine to medium. The wood is very dense and durable, contributing to strong stiffness and long use in heavy-duty applications. It can be difficult to work with: blades dull quickly, and interlocked grain can cause tear-out on some cuts. Finishing responds well to oil or lacquer.

Uses: Sawwood is used for flooring, furniture, veneer, turning, and decorative inlays where durability is important.

Distribution and sustainability: Sawwood comes from various tropical trees in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Because stock has historically been uneven and sometimes overexploited, sourcing is commonly accompanied by certification programs to promote sustainable harvesting. Trade patterns vary by region and species.
