Saturniids are a family of moths known as the giant silk moths. They belong to the order Lepidoptera and are characterized by their large size, often with impressive wingspans that can reach up to 12 inches in some species. Their wings are typically adorned with intricate patterns, eyespots, and vibrant colors, serving as a form of camouflage or defense against predators.

The life cycle of saturniids, like all moths, involves complete metamorphosis. It begins with an egg, which hatches into a larva, commonly called a caterpillar. These caterpillars are often large and may have spines or hairs, which can deter predators. After several molts, the caterpillar enters the pupal stage, typically forming a cocoon. Saturniid cocoons are often made of silk, which has been historically valuable to humans, though not as extensively as the silk produced by silkworms (Bombyx mori), which are also moths but from a different family. The adult moth emerges from the pupa, and its primary purpose is reproduction. Adult saturniids do not feed, relying on stored energy from their larval stage. Their lifespan as adults is usually very short, often only a week or two.

Saturniids are found on every continent except Antarctica, inhabiting a wide range of environments from tropical rainforests to temperate forests. Famous examples include the Luna moth (Actias luna) of North America, the Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) of Asia, and the Emperor moth (Saturnia pavonia) of Europe. Their nocturnal or crepuscular activity patterns mean they are often seen at dusk or during the night.
