sarny
Sarny refers to more than one sense in Slavic languages. In Polish, sarny is the plural of sarna, meaning roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Roe deer are small to medium-sized ungulates native to Europe and parts of Asia. They have a reddish-brown coat in summer that becomes grayish in winter, and males carry short antlers. They inhabit mixed forests, woodland edges, and agricultural landscapes, and are known for cautious behavior. Diet consists of grasses, herbs, leaves, buds, and fruits. Mating occurs in autumn, and females typically give birth to one or two fawns after a gestation of about 40 weeks. Populations vary with habitat quality; hunting is regulated in many regions. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though local pressures from habitat loss and road traffic can affect numbers.
