This method is widely used in various computing and networking applications. Common serial communication protocols include Universal Serial Bus (USB), Ethernet, and RS-232. USB, for instance, is ubiquitous for connecting peripherals like keyboards, mice, and printers to computers. Ethernet is the standard for wired local area networks, enabling devices to communicate within a network and with the internet. RS-232 is an older standard but still found in industrial equipment and certain legacy systems.

The advantages of serial communication include its simplicity, cost-effectiveness due to fewer wires, and its suitability for long-distance data transmission. While serial communication is generally slower than parallel communication for very short distances, its ability to maintain data integrity over longer runs and its efficiency in terms of hardware make it a preferred choice for many applications.
