Sandformstøbning, also known as sand casting, is a metal casting process characterized by using sand as the mold material. This is one of the oldest and most widely used methods for producing metal parts. The process begins with creating a pattern, which is a replica of the desired object. This pattern is then pressed into a fine-grained sand mixture, leaving an impression that forms the mold cavity.

Once the mold cavity is formed, the pattern is removed. The mold is typically made in two halves, a cope and a drag, which are then joined together. Molten metal is then poured into the mold cavity through a gating system. After the metal solidifies, the sand mold is broken away to reveal the cast part.

Sandformstøbning is versatile and can be used to cast a wide range of metals, including iron, steel, aluminum, and brass. It is well-suited for producing large, complex shapes and is often employed for making engine blocks, machine tool bases, and sculptures. The sand used is usually a mixture of silica sand, a binder (like clay), and water, which allows it to hold its shape when packed. The relatively low cost of sand and the simplicity of the process make sandformstøbning an economical choice for both prototyping and mass production. While the surface finish might not be as smooth as some other casting methods, it can often be improved with subsequent machining or finishing operations.
