Sancaklar refers to the plural form of sancak, a Turkish term that historically denotes both a banner or flag and an administrative district within the Ottoman Empire and, in some contexts, other Turkic polities. The word sancak originally signified a military banner carried by a unit or commander, a symbol of authority and identity for the district it represented.

In Ottoman governance, a sancak was an administrative subdivision within a larger province, such as an eyalet or vilayet. Each sancak was typically centered on a fortified town or city and governed by a sancakbeyi (sanjak-bey), who exercised civil and military authority, including tax collection and local justice, under the supervision of the provincial governor. The boundaries and prominence of sancaks could vary, influenced by military needs, population changes, and administrative reforms.

Across the Ottoman realm, sancaks were numerous in regions like Anatolia, Rumelia, and the Balkans. Notable examples include the Sanjak of Bosnia, the Sanjak of Novi Pazar, and the Sanjak of Skopje.
