Salpaimet is a term of Finnish origin that generally refers to the act of "salting" or "preserving with salt." This practice has been historically employed for various purposes, most notably in food preservation. Salting helps to draw out moisture from food, creating an environment less hospitable to bacteria and other microorganisms that cause spoilage. This method allows for longer storage times, especially before modern refrigeration became widespread.

Different types of salting exist. Dry salting involves rubbing salt directly onto the food item, while brining involves immersing the food in a saltwater solution. Both methods effectively preserve food, though they can impart a distinct salty flavor. Historically, salpaimet was a crucial technique for preserving meats, fish, and even some vegetables, ensuring a food supply through lean periods or for long journeys.
