Salmonellaan is a term used in Dutch to denote infection with Salmonella bacteria, commonly referred to in English as salmonellosis. The illness is caused by various serotypes of Salmonella enterica, most frequently S. enterica serovar Typhimurium and Enteritidis, which colonize the intestinal tract of humans and animals.

Transmission occurs mainly through ingestion of contaminated food or water, especially undercooked poultry, eggs, dairy products, and sometimes raw produce that has been contaminated. Contact with animals, including reptiles and other pets, and cross-contamination in kitchens also contribute. The incubation period is typically 6 to 72 hours.

Symptoms usually include diarrhea (often watery), fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. Most people recover without antibiotics within about a week. Dehydration risk is higher for young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. In some cases, the infection can become invasive or lead to bacteremia, requiring hospitalization and antibiotic treatment.

Diagnosis relies on the clinical presentation supported by laboratory tests, typically a stool culture to identify Salmonella. Blood cultures may be performed if invasive disease is suspected. Treatment focuses on rehydration and electrolyte management; antibiotics are reserved for severe cases, individuals at risk for complications, or invasive disease, as they can prolong bacterial carriage in some situations. Anti-motility drugs are usually avoided if invasive disease is suspected.

Prevention centers on proper food handling and cooking, pasteurization of dairy products, avoiding cross-contamination, and thorough hand hygiene after handling raw foods or animals. Public health measures include surveillance and outbreak investigations to limit transmission. Salmonella infections remain a common cause of gastroenteritis worldwide, with outbreaks often linked to poultry, eggs, or contaminated produce.
