sakabat

Sakabato, also spelled sakabatō (逆刃刀), is a fictional reverse-bladed sword prominent in the Japanese manga and anime series Rurouni Kenshin by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The term translates roughly to “reverse-edge sword.” In the story, the sword’s cutting edge is on the opposite side from a conventional katana, making it unusually difficult to draw a lethal cut.

In-universe design and use: The sakabato is depicted as a functional katana whose blade is ground so that the edge lies on the reverse side of a normal blade. Because of this reversal, the weapon is generally treated as non-lethal, aligning with the wielder’s vow to refrain from killing. Protagonist Kenshin Himura uses the sakabato to defend others and subdue opponents with controlled strikes, while still retaining enough cutting power to be dangerous in capable hands.

Cultural and narrative role: The sakabato serves as a symbol of Kenshin’s atonement for his past as an assassin.
