Safetysystems is a term used to describe integrated measures, devices, and organizational practices designed to prevent accidents, detect abnormal conditions, and mitigate consequences across a wide range of environments. They encompass industrial automation safety, building protection, transportation, and consumer devices, and can be engineered into new systems or retrofitted to existing ones.

A safetysystem typically combines sensors that monitor parameters such as temperature, pressure, gas presence, motion, and door status; safety controllers or safety PLCs that evaluate signals; and actuators or interlocks that initiate protective actions, such as shutdowns, valve isolation, or alarms. Redundancy, fail-safe design, diagnostics, and clear human-machine interfaces are central to reliability.

Applications span manufacturing and process industries, mining, energy, aviation, healthcare equipment, and smart homes. In industry, safetysystems manage process safety, machine safety, and occupational safety. In buildings, they contribute to fire protection, access control, and energy management, often integrating with broader building-management systems.

Standards relevant to safetysystems include IEC 61508 and its derivatives (functional safety of E/E/PE systems); ISO 13849-1 for machinery safety performance, and ISO 12100 for risk assessment. Electrical safety may follow NFPA 70E in workplaces. Implementation follows a lifecycle approach from hazard analysis and safety requirements to validation, operation, and maintenance.
