In some sources, the word functions as a general label for individuals who have achieved some degree of insight or realization on the path to awakening, though the exact attainment is not always specified.

Etymologically, saavuttaan is thought to derive from Pali or related languages related to the idea of being “attained” or “realized.” Because transliteration conventions vary, the form saavuttaan may appear alongside variants such as saavutta, sāvutta, or other spellings in different editions and translations. The term is not a standard technical designation in the core Canonical texts, where specific stages of attainment are usually named directly.
