Sakadagam is a Buddhist term that refers to the six preparatory abodes or realms of existence into which a being may be reborn. According to Buddhist teachings, a being's karma dictates their rebirth into one of these realms, which are seen as preparatory stages before attaining enlightenment. The six realms are often grouped into three categories: the three good realms and the three evil realms.

The three good or fortunate realms are the heavens, or Devaloka, where beings are born due to their positive karma, and the human or Titthayatan realm, where beings are also born due to their balance of positive and negative karma. The human realm is seen as the most superior of the six realms because it provides the best opportunity for enlightenment. The third good realm is the realm of the gods, who are born due to their accumulation of positive karma.

The three evil or unfortunate realms are the realm of the animals, where beings are born due to their negativities, the realm of the ghosts or Pretas, where beings suffer due to their infliction of harm on others, and the hellish realms, where beings are born due to their intense negative karma. The transmigration through these realms is seen as a cyclical process, driven by the individual's karma and often seen as a variant of the Twelve Nidanas, or basic aspects that drive the origination of suffering or existence. The concept of Sakadagam is a fundamental aspect of Buddhist cosmology, highlighting the need for rebirth as part of the cycles of existence.
