Sügavtrükki, also known as intaglio printing, is an image reproduction technique where the image is produced by incising a design into a metal plate. The plate is then inked, and the ink settles into the incised lines and hollows. The surface of the plate is wiped clean, so that only the ink in the recessed areas remains. When paper is pressed against the plate under high pressure, the ink is transferred from the recessed areas to the paper, creating the printed image.

There are several methods for creating the incised design in intaglio printing. These include engraving, etching, drypoint, and mezzotint. Engraving involves using a sharp tool to cut lines directly into the metal plate. Etching uses acid to corrode the plate, creating the image based on a design protected by a wax or varnish coating. Drypoint involves scratching lines into the plate with a sharp point, creating a characteristic burr that holds ink and produces a soft, velvety line. Mezzotint is a tonal technique where the plate is roughened to produce dark tones, and then areas are smoothed to create lighter tones.

Sügavtrükki is known for its ability to produce fine detail and rich tonal gradations, making it suitable for fine art prints and high-quality reproductions. The durability of the metal plates allows for large print runs. Historically, it was a significant method for producing currency, stamps, and book illustrations before the advent of photomechanical reproduction methods. Modern intaglio printing is still used by artists and for specialized printing applications.
