Süütemehhanism refers to the system responsible for initiating combustion within an internal combustion engine. Its primary function is to provide a spark or a flame at the precise moment required to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. The design and operation of the süütemehhanism vary depending on the engine type, but the fundamental principle remains the same.

In gasoline engines, the most common type of süütemehhanism is the spark ignition system. This system typically comprises a battery, ignition coil, distributor (in older systems), spark plugs, and associated wiring. The battery supplies the initial electrical energy. The ignition coil steps up the battery voltage to a much higher voltage, creating the necessary electrical potential to jump the gap in the spark plug. The distributor, if present, directs this high-voltage pulse to the correct spark plug at the appropriate time, synchronized with the engine's piston movement. Modern engines often utilize electronic ignition systems that eliminate the mechanical distributor, employing sensors and an engine control unit (ECU) for more precise timing.

In diesel engines, the süütemehhanism operates differently. Diesel engines rely on compression ignition. The süütemehhanism in this context primarily involves glow plugs. These are electrical heating elements located in the combustion chamber that are activated before engine startup, especially in cold conditions. The glow plugs heat the air in the cylinder to a temperature high enough to ignite the injected diesel fuel. Once the engine is running, the heat generated by the compression stroke is usually sufficient for ignition, and the glow plugs are deactivated. The timing and intensity of the glow plug operation are crucial for reliable starting.
